Sarah Granziol

Player #16 (previously 32)

Sarah Granziol, aka Granny, is anything but grandma-like! Her name may fool you but rest assured, she is one of the most motivated and talented players on Zen. Being a lefty creates easy breaks, which she often does to a mark, and can burn you up the line or for a strike whenever she wants. Her attitude is one of the reasons we are so excited to have her as a captain of Zen!

What Granny’s teammates say:

Granny is a leader. She possesses an awesome field awareness, and is always attentive to who is executing their role properly, especially if it means you are creating space for other teammates. She is also very deliberate when providing feedback and will let you know exactly what you did well, which really helps you feel like a valued member of the team.

As a teammate, she is a presence on the field you can always trust, like a Ford truck or a trustworthy rock. She can easily fill any role and knows what the team needs to hear when we’re on the field or gearing up for a point. She values the disc like it was her child (or grandchild) and is known for good decision making and a work ethic from back in the day.

“I really appreciate it when she lets me know I drew defenders away so Hugo could score the point.”

“Great silent nod of approval, terrifying scowl of disapproval.”

Number: 16 or 4

Is there significance behind your number?
I guess because it’s my birthday.

Position:
Cutter usually, but they’re making me handle this year.

What do you bring to the team?
I’m a rather conservative player and I think I bring consistency with my game.

Previous Experience:
6ixers (Women – 2016)
Lotus (Women – 2015)
Zen (Mixed – 2014)

Current Team(s):
I sub on some league teams but I’m a dedicated mofo.

Nickname(s):
Granny

Do you have a go-to pre/post game meal?
I always crave a burger, fries, and pint after a game/tournament.

Do you have a pre/post game ritual or any other superstitions?
The order I do things in is specific: get to field, cleats/brace, toss, warm-up, water, mental focus; I try not to talk to people directly before the first pull.

Least Favourite/ Favourite Fitness:
I have a love-hate relationship with Sally.

Favourite Pump-up Song:
I actually love Black Skinhead by Kanye (hate the name though haha).

What is your favourite TUC League/ Team to play on? Why?
I started with FOQ and really enjoyed Ronin. Haven’t been on a regular roster league team in a while.

Favourite Zen Tagline
#leavenodoubt (I always type spaces into hashtags…)

What teammate do you admire and why?
Julie (Alpha) DeWolf, she’s always striving for improvement. She knows herself, what she’s good at and what she needs to work on. She’s ready to push herself and to help pick her teammates back up if they fall down. She’ll tell you if you’re playing like shit in an absolutely loving way.

Is there any specific moment/ drill/ game that you consider a highlight of the season so far?
Backhand huck to Hugo in the Union game at regionals. I heard a few people on the sideline go “Whaaaat??” 🙂
