"To foster individual growth based upon fundamental skill development, guided fitness programs, and mental preparation. To provide a fun and competitive environment through individual and team-oriented goals."
Founded in 2004 as part of The Ultimate Experience in Toronto, Zen has spent over two decades developing competitive mixed players, winning spirit and tournament titles, and competing on the national stage.
In the spring of 2004, Zen was born as Zen Asylum. Frustrated with the back-and-forth debate over a team name, founder Blue McClellan declared that he wanted the name to reflect a zen-like purpose—but the discussion left him feeling like he belonged in an insane asylum. Tired and slurring his words, it came out as "in ze in-zen asylum."
Being "in Zen Asylum" became the goal for hundreds of Toronto ultimate players in the decades to come, though future leaders wisely shortened the name to simply Zen.
Within Toronto's Mixed Division club hierarchy, Zen historically acted as the crucial bridge between open/developmental touring (Mars Meet Venus / MMV) and elite championship touring (Union). In 2025, Zen also ran an ambitious 46-player traditional "club structure" experiment fielding Zen White (the competitive team) and Zen Black (the development team), where players could move up to the competitive squad or down to the development squad throughout the season based on performance.

From the original yellow "Zen Asylum" shirts of 2004 to Shawn Lee's iconic brush-ink monk and crimson maple tree illustration and the modern Enso brushstroke kits.
Created by longtime Zen player, captain (2008–2009), and coach (2013) Shawn Lee, this original sumi-e brush-ink illustration of a martial arts monk in a low stance beneath a wind-swept red maple tree became the signature visual centerpiece of Zen's sublimated jerseys across multiple seasons in the 2010s.
The artwork paired the calm discipline of the monk with falling crimson maple leaves—bridging Zen's meditative philosophy and Canadian ultimate roots.
Worn from Zen's 2011 CUC Ottawa run through 2015, pairing the Enso circle on the chest with Shawn Lee's martial arts monk and red maple tree wrapped around the lower torso and back.
Introduced during the late-2010s CUC Nationals era, featuring a bold white Enso brushstroke circle centered over a deep forest-green and charcoal diagonal fade.
Modern dark-teal geometric brushstroke jerseys paired with clean white away tops sporting the black Enso emblem across the chest.
